If you’ve ever researched insulation, you’ve likely seen “R values.” In simple terms, R value is a warmth score. It tells you how well insulation slows heat moving through your ceiling, walls or floors. The higher the R value, the better the insulation works and the more comfortable and efficient your home feels.
What exactly is an R value?
R value is a measure of thermal resistance (how strongly a material resists heat flow). It’s expressed as a single number. Since Canberra has hot summers and frosty winters, getting R values right makes a big difference, especially in the ceiling where heat is most often lost or gained.
What the ACT standard means (and what performs best
The ACT has introduced a minimum standard for ceiling insulation in rental homes. If a rental has no insulation or insulation below R2, it must be upgraded to at least R5. If existing ceiling insulation is R2 or higher, it meets the basic standard. In the Canberra climate, R5.0 or higher in the roof space is a smart target for most detached homes because it offers excellent comfort per dollar.
What should you aim for in Canberra?
• Ceiling: Aim for R5.0+. It’s the single biggest comfort and efficiency upgrade for most homes.
• Walls: Where retrofit is suitable, around R2.5–R2.7 delivers noticeable gains in temperature stability and noise reduction.
• Underfloor (timber): Around R2.0–R2.5 helps tame winter drafts and cold floors.
These aren’t one‑size‑fits‑all rules; they’re common, proven targets that balance comfort, cost and practicality in our region.

Why installation quality matters as much as the number
A label on a bag gives you a product R value. Real world performance depends on coverage and technique. Gaps, compression or poor clearances can undermine the result. That’s why our EEC certified installers focus on:
• Full, even coverage to eliminate cold and hot spots
• Correct fit around joists, services and penetrations
• Safe clearances around downlights, flues and fans
• Documentation so you know exactly what’s been installed
How we tailor solutions to your home
Every home is different. We start with a practical assessment of your roof space (and walls/floors where relevant):
1. Measure what’s there — thickness, condition and approximate R value
2. Check the space — ventilation, moisture, wiring and access
3. Recommend the best path — top up (if the existing insulation is clean and even), or remove & replace when it’s patchy, contaminated or compressed
4. Right products, right R values — we’ll suggest premium Australian made batts. If you need to reach a higher target, we can layer products to meet the desired R value without compression.
5. Clean, compliant install — then we provide a report for your records.
The bottom line
R value is the backbone of an efficient, comfortable Canberra home. Choose sensible targets (especially in the ceiling), insist on neat, gap free installation, and you’ll feel the difference from the first week.
Not sure what you have now? Book a free assessment — we’ll make R values simple and get your home performing the way it should.
